SMZB New Single, “The Last of the Mohicans”

The Wuhan punk legends SMZB just released an new single on Bandcamp. They finally got their rights back from Maybe Mars (which didn’t seem to be very eager to use them), so they now have their own Bandcamp page (that you should definitely check out). An article by the English blog London Celtic Punk also mentions the new single, “The Last of the Mohicans” (one in Chinese and one in English), which is dedicated to the Ukrainians three years after the beginning of the war. It’s the first single of their new album. Can’t wait.

The Kowloon Tong of Jackson Wang

An article in Travel + Leisure on Kowloon Tong, the birthplace of Hong Kong pop singer Jackson Wang.

Miyavi wants to be a Chinese rock star

Another inspiring story of Sino-Japanese friendship from the Global Time: the Japanese rock singer Miyavi (Ishihara Takamasa) wants to become a rock star in China after participating to the Chinese reality TV show Call Me by Fire Season 4.

A Taiwanese indie-rock band talks about mental health

Rose Tomb 玫瑰墓 is a Taiwanese indie-rock band formed by an emergency room doctor 18 years ago. The Taipei Times features an article on the band, who gives lectures at schools to talk about mental health issues.

Lu Haobin on trap music

An article on Pulse Media on Lu Haobin, a Chinese hip-hop artist who blends Chinese traditional music with trap music. See this other article (in Chinese) on 音樂中國.

An article in the SCMP on Kiri T, the Hong Kong American singer who rediscovered her HK roots in her music. Her last single is called “榮譽博士 PhD”…

Green Day tour in Asia

Green Day Asian tour kickstarted in Macau on February 9 (there’s already a book about Green Day previous tour in the region called In China with Green Day). There’s an article on Macau Business, another one on the SCMP about the tightened political climate in Malaysia regarding LGBTQIA+ rights and its influence on the music scene, especially during Green Day’s tour.

The Flame, a Hong Kong busker band who performs in public places, regains popularity after the ban on public performances during the COVID-19 pandemic, as a video of +852 shows:

Kaiser Chief in Hong Kong

I predict a riot… Kaiser Chief, the famous indie-rock band from Leeds, will headline the rugby tournament Hong Kong Sevens this March, which will be in Kai Tak for the first time, according to Time Out. Still better than Cold Play.

The Beijing jazz band Red Hand release their first album

The Beijing jazz band Red Hand, formed 20 years ago in Beijing, released their first album, “Touch” this month. They used to play every other week at D22 back in 2006, according to the China Daily.

Chinese boom in live performances

Since the end of the COVID restrictions, China has seen a rise in live performances all across the country, supported by municipal authorities who hope to get some revenue out of it, according to the China Daily. Another article by the Global Times notes the surge in all kind of cultural performances in Chinese cities, including international acts as Les Misérables (do they hear the people sing?).

Review of Andrew Field’s Rocking China

Andrew Field, a Chinese studies scholar at Duke Kunshan University who studies Shanghai jazz music in the 1920s, recently published a book about rock and roll in China, mainly focused on the late D22 (2006-2012). David Frazier published a review of his book in the Taipei Times, and I don’t think he really enjoyed his reading.

Barbie Hsu passed away

The Taiwanese actor and singer Barbie Hsu, known for her pop band SOS and her acting in the soap opera Meteor Garden, died at 48, according to the Independent. Another article (in Chinese) draws parallels between Barbie Hsu and Teresa Teng, who also passed away very young.

The Tamil rapper WoShiJay singing in Mandarin

The Tamil rapper WoShiJay gained fame on TikTok after releasing a Mandarin song for Lunar New Year, according to FMT Lifestyle.

“The expat band transforming Shanghai’s independent music scene”

Another embarrassing article on the Chinese music scene written by expats on expats in Think China. Not that Round Eye, the Shanghai underground band composed of foreigners which is the focus of the article, is not a really good and important band, but as usual the author downplays the importance of local bands – “Beijing and Shanghai remain the only cities where “local” bands are likely to be made up primarily of musicians born outside China.” Poor Top Floor Circus.
